Dr. Coppoletti is a veteran PTA educator with a diverse clinical and academic background. He has earned degrees from Northern Illinois University, the University of Iowa, and Shenandoah University. His career includes work as a PTA, rural hospital director, pediatric cooperative therapist, and MPT faculty at Southwest Baptist University. He also led the Shawnee State PTA Program for eight years, served a decade at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College, and directed the Hocking College PTA Program. Dr. Coppoletti has served on the Ohio PT Licensure Board, the OPTA Ethics Committee, and as a consultant to NPTE Final Frontier. He is part of an international team teaching in Cameroon’s first PT bachelor’s program and currently teaches for Lake Superior College’s PTA Military Bridge Program.

Rethinking Adaptive Equipment Education: How Immersive Learning is Transforming PTA Programs

If you’ve ever tried to teach Physical Therapist Assistant students about adaptive equipment without actually having the equipment on hand, you know the challenge. You’re describing button hooks and dressing sticks, maybe waving around the few items you managed to order from Amazon, hoping your students can visualize how these tools work with real patients who have complex needs. It’s one of those persistent frustrations in PTA education—so much to teach, so little time, and often limited resources to make the learning truly stick.

We created the Adaptive Equipment app at PhysioU to solve exactly this problem. And in our recent webinar, “Rethinking Adaptive Equipment,” we walked through how this tool is helping PTA programs across the country provide students with the immersive, practical learning experiences they need, even when physical equipment isn’t available.

The Reality of PTA Education Today

Let’s be honest about what PTA educators are up against. Programs are compressed and accelerated, packing an enormous amount of content into a condensed timeframe. Students are drinking from a firehose, trying to master everything from manual muscle testing to gait training to—yes—adaptive equipment instruction, all while preparing for clinical rotations that come up fast.

And here’s the thing about adaptive equipment: it’s essential knowledge that students absolutely need, but it’s also episodic. A new graduate might not encounter a patient who needs a sock aid for months, then suddenly find themselves working with someone with a spinal cord injury who needs comprehensive ADL training. When that moment comes, they need to know what to do.

The traditional approach has been to cobble together what equipment you can find. If you’re lucky enough to have an Occupational Therapy program on campus, maybe you can borrow from their collection. More often, programs end up with a basic combo kit—a long-handled shoehorn, a sock aid, a reacher—and make do. As Sam Coppoletti, our PTA Education Lead, shared in the webinar, “I was lucky enough to have one program that had a master’s in occupational therapy at Shawnee State in Ohio, and they literally had drawers and files of all the adaptive equipment and splints… It overwhelmed me when I saw it all at once.” 

That overwhelming variety is exactly the point. There are dozens of adaptive devices, each with specific applications, patient education requirements, and safety considerations. Students need exposure to this breadth, but most programs simply can’t provide it through physical inventory alone.

An Immersive Alternative

The Adaptive Equipment app takes a different approach. Instead of trying to replicate a fully stocked equipment room, we built the learning experience around a real client—a former truck driver with a spinal cord injury. Students see him attempting daily tasks, struggling with challenges, and then successfully using various adaptive devices with proper instruction.

Every piece of equipment featured in the app includes four essential components: an overview video showing what the device is and how it works, therapist instruction demonstrating how to teach a patient to use it, patient education content, and safety tips. Those safety considerations cover both patient and clinician awareness—reminding students to consider precautions, watch for heavy objects, and think through the full context of equipment use.

The equipment library covers the core ADL tools PTA students need to know: button hooks, dressing sticks, reachers, zipper pulls, and more. Each item is demonstrated in context, with the same client, creating continuity and allowing students to understand not just individual devices but how multiple tools might work together for a patient with specific functional limitations.

As Tracy Moore, our PT Education Lead, noted during the webinar, “There are some pieces of information students are going to need on a daily basis in the clinic, their daily drivers, and then there are other ones that are really nice to have in their back pocket.” Adaptive equipment often falls into that second category—not used every single day, but critical to have mastered when the need arises.

Building Critical Thinking Skills

Beyond the equipment demonstrations themselves, the app includes a detailed case study that instructors can use to develop clinical reasoning skills. The case presents the patient’s history, his ASIA score, his current mobility and assistance needs, and his home goals. Then it poses questions that require students to think critically about equipment selection and patient education.

This transforms the learning from simple memorization—”this is a reacher, this is how you hold it”—into meaningful application. Students must consider the patient’s specific impairments, his functional goals, his home environment, and then determine which adaptive equipment would be most beneficial and how to teach its use effectively.

The questions in the case study are strategically designed to promote discussion. Instructors can use them for small group work in lab sessions or assign them as individual critical thinking exercises. The answers are provided within the app for educators, but they’re hidden from students. This is done intentionally to allow students to work through their own reasoning, allowing for self-guided learning or instructor-facilitated review.

Practical Integration into Your Curriculum

One of the most valuable parts of our webinar was walking through exactly how instructors can weave this app into their existing curriculum. The integration doesn’t require a complete course overhaul—instead, the app becomes a tool that enhances what you’re already doing.

Many programs use a lab passport system, where students must complete certain activities to gain lab access and practice time. The Adaptive Equipment app fits naturally into this structure. Instructors can create a passport that includes links directly to specific equipment demonstrations, the case study questions, and any additional activities. Students work through these at their own pace, document completion electronically, and submit their case study responses through the learning management system.

For programs that want more structured tracking, PhysioU’s Educator Dashboard allows instructors to create cohorts and assign any e-learning module or simulation within PhysioU. You can set up a cohort for your entire class, assign specific e-learning or simulation activities with due dates, and monitor student progress and scores in real time. It’s a simple way to ensure accountability while giving students the flexibility to learn when and where works best for them.

Beyond Adaptive Equipment: A Complete Learning Ecosystem

While the webinar focused specifically on the Adaptive Equipment app, it’s worth noting that this is just one piece of a much larger platform. The apps on the right side emphasize summative learning through simulations that require critical thinking, clinical decision-making, and problem-solving. Together, they support student development from novice to competent practitioner, ready for clinical practice.

Meeting CAPTE Standards with Confidence

For program directors and coordinators preparing for accreditation visits, having tools that address CAPTE standards is essential. The Adaptive Equipment app—like all our apps—includes clear documentation of which curricular standards it addresses. This makes it easy to show evaluators how you’re providing students with comprehensive exposure to essential content areas, even when physical resources are limited.

And here’s something many programs don’t realize: all faculty members receive free access to PhysioU. You just need an .edu email address to get set up. This means you can explore the full platform, test apps with your curriculum, and determine exactly how each tool might benefit your students—all without any financial commitment upfront.

Looking Ahead

The response to this webinar has been encouraging, with several faculty members already reaching out to discuss how they might integrate not just the Adaptive Equipment app but multiple PhysioU tools throughout their curriculum. We recently completed a lunch-and-learn session with one program where we mapped their entire course sequence and identified relevant apps for nearly every term. The faculty were surprised by how many resources they hadn’t been aware of—the platform has grown significantly, and it’s easy to miss tools that could be valuable.

A Resource in Your Pocket

Perhaps the most compelling thing about the Adaptive Equipment app—and the broader PhysioU platform—is that it doesn’t end when students graduate. These apps become professional resources they can carry into clinical practice. When a new grad encounters a patient situation they haven’t seen since school, they have immediate access to clear, demonstration-based guidance right on their phone. That’s the kind of support that builds confidence in new clinicians and, ultimately, leads to better patient outcomes. And isn’t that what we’re all working toward—preparing assistants who are not just knowledgeable but truly ready to serve their patients effectively from day one?
