Dr. Coppoletti is a veteran PTA educator with a diverse clinical and academic background. He has earned degrees from Northern Illinois University, the University of Iowa, and Shenandoah University. His career includes work as a PTA, rural hospital director, pediatric cooperative therapist, and MPT faculty at Southwest Baptist University. He also led the Shawnee State PTA Program for eight years, served a decade at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College, and directed the Hocking College PTA Program. Dr. Coppoletti has served on the Ohio PT Licensure Board, the OPTA Ethics Committee, and as a consultant to NPTE Final Frontier. He is part of an international team teaching in Cameroon’s first PT bachelor’s program and currently teaches for Lake Superior College’s PTA Military Bridge Program.

Building Clinical Confidence: How Assistive Device Simulations Transform PTA Education

Physical Therapist Assistant programs face a unique challenge. With compressed timeframes and accelerated curricula, PTA educators must prepare students for the complexities of real-world clinical practiceβ€”often without access to the equipment, patient populations, or practice hours they need. Partner practice has its limits. Students can only approximate so many disabilities and impairments before the learning experience becomes more theatrical than educational.

Perhaps the most valuable feature of these simulations is the documentation component. After working through each patient case, students complete a SOAP note using an evidence-based rubric developed in collaboration with the University of Cincinnati. This isn’t generic documentation practiceβ€”it’s a structured framework based on APTA’s defensible documentation guidelines.

The rubric breaks down exactly what should be included in each section: procedural interventions, functional training, observations, patient education, precautions, assessment statements, and plan elements. Students even document CPT codes and total treatment time. It’s comprehensive preparation for the documentation expectations they’ll face in clinical practice.

And here’s what transforms this from a one-and-done assignment into genuine learning: students can repeat each simulation as many times as needed. Got a 65% on the first attempt? Go back, review the educator key, understand where your clinical reasoning broke down, and try again. This iterative approachβ€”where students work toward 75% or 80% competency on their own timelineβ€”builds both skill and confidence.

Seamless Integration Into Your Curriculum
